Tracker Training

An advanced text, TRACKER TRAINING is written for those seeking a variety of tracking exercises. It is based on Speiden’s FAST book, with citations of basic material in that textbook. This book describes, in full detail, over 50 exercises (some classroom and mostly field) for practicing tracking including homework. While focusing on human tracking, there are also exercises described for animal tracking – both of which have significant overlap and similarities in skills. This work is intended for training officers, group leaders, class instructors and anyone interested in practicing skills important to a tracker.

Each section describes, in detail, these facets of class and field exercises:

  • Exercise Name
  • Exercise objectives
  • Background rationale
  • Real-world search example
  • Timeframes for setup and completion
  • Recommended equipment for participant and facilitator
  • Exercise description including setup, briefing and debriefing
  • Possible number of participants and/or teams
  • Variations on the main exercise
  • Pitfalls to avoid

This 168-page full-sized manual, with over 80 pictures and 25 illustrations, is chock full of exercises, templates, and excerpts from Speiden’s first book Foundations for Awareness, Signcutting and Tracking. It was written for those that are interested in (1) practicing tracking on their own, (2) having someone else set up an exercise for you, (3) looking to train a team or (4) seeking exercises for skill advancement. It was written, printed, and published in the USA.
